Q: Hi
I have a SCI0404 shower enclosure from B&Q, about 4 years old with, I think, an Aqaumix revitalise thermo mixer shower in it. The temperature seems to eratic, or just cold, I assume that the cartridge is broken? Big limescale issue here. Is this the right one cartridge? Are these standard items? How can I tell? (Combi boiler by the way, thanks.)

A: To check whether you have a boiler or shower fault.
Turn the shower on as usual, try and get a hold of the pipe going tothe shower, if you can’t get to the pipe at the shower you may be able to get toit as it leaves the boiler. What ever the temperature is on/in this pipe, the shower can neverget any hotter than that (So if the temperature is cool then something then atthe boiler is not allowing the water to heat up enough) The other fault is wide variations in thetemperature of the water leaving the boiler. A thermostatic shower valve should be able to even out smallvariations in temperature however if you have large variations then you have aboiler fault. Youwill have to find out which cartridge you have. Pinkfor a combi or multipoint and grey any system with balanced (equal)pressures. Removethe on/off knob should just pull forward however it can be a bit of a bu**erthen remove the 4 screws that hold the temperature knob in place, remove thetemperature knob and then you will see the colour of your cartridge. If youalready have the cartridge and want to carry on and replace it you will have toturn the water off to the shower. Thenremove the cartridge you will need to remove the 4 large screws at the side ofthe cartridge these have posidrive or ‘Torx’ T25 heads depending on thereage. Pullthe cartridge forward to remove. Beforefitting the new cartridge you should replace the small ‘O’ ring at the rear ofthe body this is another bu**er to change……(something like a crochet hook or thesort of thing that dentists use will help) It is not always necessary to replace this ring however if there anyproblems with the cartridge, the first question you will be asked is did youreplace the ‘O’ ring? if the answer is no! then you will be told to phone backonce it has been replaced. Whenyou refit the cartridge make sure that the slot, (usually on the right of thebody ) the gasket and the body all line up properly then retighten thescrews. On theolder versions you have to reuse the original brass screws if you have this typebe careful not to over tighten the screws because the brass inserts in the bodymay split, on a few occasions you may find they have split when you remove theold cartridge if this happens then you will probably have toreplace the body. Refitthe temperature control knob (new screws supplied) the fit the on/ off knob, turn the water back on and check for leaks, if everything is OKremove clothes and have a shower!!! Q: Thanks again for the quick reply.
Given the only other option is spending hundreds of pounds replacing the tap body or getting a whole new mixer/bath filler, do you think it might be worth a try sticking a line of silicone sealant around the metal body/ plastic insert join line (as long as it doesn't block the cold water input?

A: Absolutelynothing to stop you trying silicon. Ihave tried various things in the past none of which were 100% successful the best result was with Araldite but still had a small weep from the joint. Theother problem with Araldite is it is pretty much a one way thing, if it bondsthe cartridge and the plastic insert together there is no way it will comeapart. Answered 323 days ago | The Doc

Q: Thanks for answering my previous question so quickly.
There was something black inside the hot-water input, but it was so solid (I tried prising it out with a needle), and flush with the housing I didn't think it could be the o-ring (see attached picture).
I don't believe the leak can be from a badly seated gasket as I've removed & replaced both my the new and old cartridges at least a dozen times. I can't see any brass inserts (although it is an 'old style' body, dating from about 1995). Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks.

A: Yes you have ID’d the ‘O’ ring they can become hard with age....The reason for having to replace them. Now the bad news.... The leak is coming from the seal between the brass body ofthe tap and the plastic insert that holds the cartridge. The plastic insert is inserted by a machine, at one time youcould send the tap away and have a new insert, inserted unfortunately Aqualisano longer offer this service, and to my knowledge there is no way to fix thisleak. Q: I've just fitted a new cartridge to my Aquamixer (mk1), but I couldn't see any ‘O’ ring at the rear of the body, nor any obvious seating for one. I replaced the cartridge because both the shower head and the base of the mixer control were leaking. The leak from the mixer control still continues, could this be due to a lack of O-ring at the hot water input?

A: The rear ‘O’ ring at the rear can be difficult to see 9butit will be there inside the round ‘hole’ at the rear of the body, this ringwill have no effect on any leak from the body. If you have a leak from the body of the valve it is likely thatthe gasket has not been seated properly, or you have the old style body withthe brass inserts in the body and these inserts may have sheared. If you check these things and still have a problem then canyou send us a couple of photos of where the leak is coming from also a photo ofthe body with the cartridge removed if possible. Q: Just had a combi boiler fitted and noticed a slight drip from my 600 Thermo shower. To replace the cartridge I will isolate the cold water supply, but how does this affect the combi boiler? Do I have to switch it off and will it drain as well or is this seperate and it won't send water through the shower?

A: Turning off the mains water will stop the boiler (hot water) and shut of the cold to the shower. Putting on the shower and getting no water will confirm this. Answered 378 days ago | Barrie

A: The temperature problem may be caused by the boiler flowrate. See below for how to check. Regarding the temperaturefluctuation or cool running it could be a faulty cartridge however to checkthis, see if you can get hold of the hot supply pipe before it enters theshower or perhaps as it leaves the boiler. If when holding this pipe thetemperature fluctuates or goes cool then the problem is not with the shower butmore likely with the boiler as the shower can only deliver what the boilersends to it. # Disregard the temperature at thetaps as they have a different flow rate. If the pressures are reasonably balancedthen the existing cartridge can work OK and you only need to change it for apink cartridge if/when you start having problems. However the boiler installer mayinsist that you need the combi cartridge before he is prepared to check forfaults elsewhere. Answered 497 days ago | The Doc

A: As long as the hot and cold pressures are roughly similar the grey cartridge will do, however if the cartridge is old then the extra pressure may cause it to drip and it will have to be replaced Answered 568 days ago | The doc

Q: I bought a new pink cartridge as the old one was leaking and used the yellow flow regulator for my 80,000Btu combi boiler. However after a couple of months the ability to adjust the temperature has gone. When you get to half on the you a minor adjustment goes from cold straight to hot. It is difficult to get a warm shower.

Q: Hi I have recently changed from an old foam cylinder 900x450 top entry immersion and boost pump to an oso direct unvented pressurised system and in doing so it has amplified a leak from the aqualisa mixers shower head ! It seems there is a cassette or something in behind the large rotary knob and sometimes it will not switch off supply of water out the spray head unless you swing the lever behind from cold to hotter a few times to loosen it then it turns off flow !
I have now unscrewed hose to shower head at mixer and taps thread and the valve is constantly passing water which when connected up makes the head keep dripping 24/7 please help !.. Thanks, Matt

A: Your shower is the Aqualisa 609 thermostatic shower valve, If the shower is dripping form the shower head when switched off , leaking from the frotnt of the cartridge , not hot or no cold coming from the shower or cycling hot and cold then a new combi cartridge is need - part number 022802 from the spares diagram in this link provided - http://www.showerdoc.com/shower-spares/aqualisa/AQUAL-PARENT-3-Aqualisa-Aquavalve-609-Thermostatic---409-ManualIf the shower is on a gravity fed system then you need to replace with cartridge 022801 the LP cartridge. Q: My Aqualisa Shower Multipoint Cartridge Pink 022802 has just gone bonk. But after looking around I can’t find any that are identical. The plastic assembly with the spring going around it is different to the one I have that’s white without any fins on the front. But all I can find are black with fin. Will these still be compatible
Thanks

A: If you have a pink cartridge at the moment then the newer pink cartridge will fit. I am not sure what you mean when you say you have a white cartridge......the white cartridges were manufactured 93>96 and don’t have a “spring” Answered 890 days ago | The Doc

Q: I have this shower system and it is dripping from the head. This is a problem that I had with my previous Aqualisa system too.
I note that there is a specific cartridge for a combi boiler system. From memory mine has a grey cartridge.
Will the Multipoint still fit the system and is it possible that having the wrong cartridge has caused the problem?

A: If the shower is dripping from the shower head when switched off , having temperature problems EG: not hot or no cold then you will require a new cartridge assembly.
Before ordering parts please make sure you dont have problems with the water supplying the shower first or your boiler is at fault.
If you have recently changed your system from a gravity fed system to a combi boiler and the unit has started to have faults like the above then you will need to fit the pink multipoint cartridge.
If you have a Gravity Fed syatem or you are on a shower pump then you will require a Grey LP cartridge P/N 022801
If your shower is on a Combi boiler then you will require the Pink Multipoint cartridge P/N 022802 Answered 1014 days ago | SD
