From what you say it may be being starved of water (an air lock)
Remove the shower head and lay the hose in the bottom of the shower tray or bath then turn the shower on to fully cold and allow to run for about 3mins then turn the shower to fully hot and allow to run for 3mins this may draw any air in the system through.
There are filters on the thermostatic cartridge, however this is part of the inlet valve and regarded as a sealed unit, it can be taken apart however it can sometimes be difficult to reseal.
