My temp control knob splines had stripped. The new cover did not 'cover' the valve body like the old cover, and if I had used it the temp control knob would not engage with the splines - so I had to reuse the old cover and on/off ring, using only the new temp control knob. However the new knob still dosent engage fully with the splines which could lead to premature stripping again.
