I found it impossible to remove the outlet pipe from the casing without dismantling the complete shower unit, so I sawed off the outlet pipe below the solenoid valve. The valve was then easy to remove.
It took me almost an hour to remove the old one but the new one was fitted and all boxed up in two minutes. The modified valve is a far superior design.
