Intermittent pressure

I have water supply to the shower but lack of pressure. when I rotate the control knob I get pressure but when I take my hand off the knob the pressure drops again. I can press against the knob and get pressure. Therefore I think the pump can still function but there must be a lack of force against a switch or something i.e. maybe a feature of the control knob is worn etc. Please advise

It may be the above or a faulty back of the knob that is causing the problem.
