Intermittant on/off

Hi, the pump is a separate unit and seems OK; so does the hose. The problem seems to be with the on/off mechanism. I have always had to turn the temperature control lever to cold before the pump would kick in. What actually turns the pump on, and how do you remove the on/off control knob? Does it unscrew or pull off after you have removed the retaining screw in the knob insert?

The pump is activated by the water flowing through it, you probably have less flow through the hot than the cold.

The Knob just pulls off, but it can be difficult.
