Seal at rear of Cartridge

I have water leaking out of the little holes in the grey plastic at the front of the Cartridge (used for positioning stops?) which is then running both from the bottom of the control knob and also finding its way back into the wall cavity. How can this happen? The O ring was on the back of the cartridge but you mention that it should be located in the body of the shower - is it quite normal for the O ring to transfer itself on withdrawal of the cartridge as I cannot see what would retain it in the body.

If there is water leaking out of these holes then you need to replace the cartridge, however it would be unusual for the cartridge to leak there.

I am not sure which seal you are referring to, there is one small seal that fits inside the cartridge at the back and one that fits on the outside of the cartridge between the cartridge body and the shroud.

I have now replaced the cartridge with new and this does not leak through the front. However it does not turn off the hot and clearly there is a problem at the back with the seal provided by the small O ring. The hot water is obviously running straight through to the mixed outlet. Reading about this O ring it says it needs to be feed in to a groove with a screwdriver inside the body. The body of my mixer does not have such a groove - instead it has an open recess large enough to easily take the O ring but seemingly with nothing to retain it firmly in place. I am now wondering whether the body is faulty, perhaps missing an internal ring of plastic that is normally fixed in position within the hole in the body to form the internal groove to hold the O ring. But then surely someone else would have reported having this problem?

The old cartridge may have had an "O" ring and the white split ring that comes with the cartridge. If it did you should fit the same to the new cartridge. Not all bodies use an "O" ring in a groove, some use this other method.
