Plumbers well-qualified and enjoy job satisfaction, say

Today's plumbers generally enjoy the work they do and many of them boast a formal qualification.

This is according to a survey carried out by AXA Business Insurance, which polled hundreds of tradesmen across the UK, such as plumbers, electricians and builders, HVP Magazine reported.

When asked to rate how happy they were with their occupation on a scale of one to ten, the average response was a healthy eight.

This is in spite of some unsociable working hours that plumbers and other tradesmen do. The lion's share (89 per cent) conceded they sometimes work weekends, while more than one-fifth (22 per cent) admitted they always did. It transpired the average working week was 41 hours.

The majority of tradesmen (83 per cent) have a formal professional qualification, while nearly two-fifths (37 per cent) have been university educated.

Additionally, as many as 70 per cent had undertaken an apprenticeship in their trade.

In a bid to encourage more to follow suit, nearly half of those polled offered youngsters a formal apprenticeship within their own business.

While only one in ten of those surveyed were women, two-thirds of them were aged 35 or younger, suggesting such a profession is perhaps becoming more attractive for females towards the beginning of their careers.

Some workers in these industries feel prejudiced by cliches and stereotypes, and it transpired that, while one-quarter of those surveyed did read the Sun newspaper, the same proportion would browse the Times.

Interestingly, only 41 per cent of such tradesmen would opt for a cup of tea while they undertake their craft. Coffee and water were second and third respectively, with just a handful (four per cent) asking their host for herbal or green tea on the job.

The recent proliferation of social media has had an effect on plumbers and other such workers. More than one-fifth used Facebook and Twitter for business purposes, while the figure for LinkedIn was even higher, at 30 per cent.
