Shower overheats when switched off

My CF Plus shower is around 4 years old and has started to overheat badly when switched off, or when the isolation switch is swithed on).

The unit is normally operating on a lowish (3 to 4) full heat setting and, if left at that setting when the on/off button is pushed (off), continues to heat the water even though the flow has stopped. It boils and starts to splutter from the showerhead before the TCO eventually kicks in and the overheat light comes on.

In the past week I've noticed it doing this now on half heat settings. On half heat and cold settings the power and full heat indicator lights are on (but not the half heat indicator). On full heat, power/half/full indicators light as normal (or what I assumed was normal...).

Is the TCO at fault, or has the whole shower just gone mad? It is starting to smell slightly fried, although there's no visible indication of damage internally and nothing loose...

If when it is switched off you hear it continuing to heat (Noise like a kettlestarting to boil) this will mean that there is a switch that is stuckin the on position,
