Valve becomes difficult to adjust

We have now had two cartridges.since 1998 and both became increasingly difficult to adjust until they reached the point where they jammed completely and had to be replaced. With the second unit, the spindle must have broken away from the internal assembly and simply rotated and did nothing. If I replace this one, can you suggest an appropriate service/care regime for the capsule that will avoid his problem?

Depending on the water quality these cartridges should last about 5 years. Since there are no serviceable parts you may be able to extend their life span by removing their filters and trying to spray some silicon grease inside.
