worn "teeth" on on off valve: kai crosswater shower bar

My Kai shower bar is in good condition but the on/off twist does not always work unless I tighten the screw under the cover. My plumber tells me this is because the "teeth" of the valve may have worn away. Can I just buy a new cartridge, assuming this is where the teeth sit, or do I have to buy a complete new shower bar?

It is likely to be the handle which is damaged rather than the cartridge. The handles are no longer available , so buying a www.showerdoc.com/mx-bullet-thermostatic-brass-bar-mixer-valve-only-chrome-hmj maybe a better choice.
