Crosswater valve

I have an old style (red button) concealed shower valve that has recently been playing up. I’ve exposed the unit and established that the COLD side non return valve is letting hot water pass through it (cold side inlet pipe work gets hot when the adjacent bath or sink cold tap is on). Question...I’m assuming the Non Return Valve is removed by unscrewing it from the valve body by the hex nut but don’t know what the slotted screw in the middle of the NRV does (see photo) and whether this needs to be unscrewed first (is it a locking mechanism or to release water pressure) or is it some flow calibration device? The Crosswater manual doesn’t explain... Many thanks in advance.

The NRV are just unscrewed with a spanner once the water is off .The slot in the NRV is used to shut the water off if you are just removing the temperature cartridge.
