I have had the PRD button pop out and have been advised to clean the shower head before fitting the new one. have you any advice on cleaning the head.

This would depend on what is causing the blockage, limescale etc.

You need to clean the head until all the holes allow unrestricted water flow.
You can test this by blowing in the end of the shower head, after introducing some water into the head, to see if the holes are clear.

It is the cleaning of the shower head that is the problem. On television it shows cleaning by soaking in a bowl with a mixture of cillit bang lime and grime with water. Can this damage the head materials.

Cleaning with Cillit Bang should be fine. But you should do a test area first to be sure.
