refitting the outlet elbow

does the whole motor and water section have to be removed from the inlets in order to remove the elbow to fit a new one. How else does the old elbow come off?

No if you look at the replacement part on the link below you will see that by relesing the locking lugs and rotating the elbow it will be released from the pump by pulling outwards and sliding out.
Replacement is the reverse
