Checking Themostatic valve

I'm using this to replace an Ultra thermostat in a Ultra 3/4 Dual Control Shower Valve. Putting it in hot water only gets max 1mm of movement compared to cold - is that broken?

And I suspect I need the spring it connects to (as the thermostat keeps dropping inside the spring loops. What is the part required for that (do I also need the brass spring back piston assembly?

From what you say I suspect that you have not put things back correctly.

The picture here shows the way things should go, ignore the "O" ring, this is where the spring should be.
If the thermostat moves 1mm I would change it.
