Flow cartridge separated into two pieces?

I have a Trevi shower with thermostatic valve, which I guess is about 7-10 years old. The valves are operated by a spindle with gears. It looks like this design, and I think I have the same problem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Rne58ATWBQ) Although I can control the flow when set to warm temperatures, it still runs when turned off if the temperature is set to cold. I have attempted to remove the flow cartridge (cold), and find that only the top brass part comes off to leave the butterfly shaped ceramic valve in place as well as the lower part of the cartridge. I suspect this should not happen, and is the reason why there is still flow. Should I be able to simply pull out the bottom of the valve, and will this replacement valve fit?

These valves have a habit of coming apart , when they are old, when you try and remove them.
You will need to remove all the bits ( butterfly bits etc ) carefully , as they may drop into the valve body, and replace them with the , www.showerdoc.com/trevi-1-2-inch-dx-1-4-turn-flow-cartridge-anti-clockwise-close-a952501nu11
