Male/Female connection on elbow

I need to replace the elbow on my Trevi shower, the chrome has flaked off of the original plastic/chrome elbow. The water pipe is a male connection so the elbow needs to be female. I have had great difficulty sourcing a suitable part, this part looks to have male connector at inlet - does this come out to allow it to be used to connect to a male outlet? I'll perhaps need to photograph the part I need to replace but it is identical apart from the inlet side is female not male.
