Ideal 715 CP MIXER - replacement

I have a 715 mixer that has become very stiff, so may need a replacement thermostatic unit. Is it possible to fit a more modern control unit to the present base unit which is not accessible from the rear? A combined on and off lever/thermostat design would be good as it would be easier to use. The backing plate would need to be big enough to cover the present hole in the tile.

Unfortunately there is nothing that is a direct change over.

Fitting a new cartridge should solve the problem, however I appreciate that this may be fairly expensive .......But not as expensive as replacing the shower!
