Meynell SM1not shutting off

Shower will not turn off, when I turn the knob it springs back and water continues to flow out. I've tried removing the knob to check for limescale etc but I can't get it off and removing the grub screw makes no difference. How do I access the parts behind the knob? And is it neccesary to turn off the water supply to do this?

The valve probably needs a strip down clean lube and a service kit fitted

However removing the knob can be an issue.

In the first instance try a few kettles of boiling water over it, this may just expand it just enough to help it come off, you could try heat from say a gas torch however you gave to be careful not to damage the chrome, on some occasions our engineers have had to cut the knob off with a hack saw and then replace the knob.
