Mira gem 88 impossible to fit temperature knob

Fitting a new gem 88 it seems impossible to get the temp knob to latch in. It seems as if the flow control & other washers in the knob assy are not leaving enough space fot the temp knob to properly engae, so it keeps popping off

All the handle parts of this shower fit in a very precise way so I would disassemble it and try again.
