Repeated TCO failure

Great site with good advice - diagnosed the original fault (TCO failure) & got replacement part quickly. However, after fitting the new TCO, it appears to have failed again in the same manner. I've checked the other possible problems as detailed here - the flow valve seems to be working ok and there is no 'boiling' after switch off. (This is a Mira Sport, which seems to switch off the elements and allow the water to continue running for a few seconds when the 'off' switch is pressed, so I know the elements are definitely cooling down ok.)

What could be the reason for the new TCO failing so soon after installation? Is there a reasonable failure rate on this part, or would it be pretty rare for a new one to fail? There don't appear to be any leaks into the shower or anything.

Thanks for your help.

You would need to test if there is still power getting across the TCO when the shower is  switched off. If so then you may have a faulty micro switch, if thisis the case replace the faulty switch or relay and make sure that you switch theshower off at the isolating switch when the shower is not in use because thismay cause the new TCO to fail.
Alos when fitting a new TCO make sure you do not press the bottom.

You have probably read this before however.....

I think a micro switch is stuck in the on position, this is keeping one of the elements energised after you have switched off the shower will keep heating and perhaps boil off some of the water inside, until the Thermal Cur Out (TCO) cuts the power off to the elements, when the shower cools down the TCO will allow the power back to the elements and the whole process starts again.

You will have to trace which switch is causing the problem and replace it. (On some showers the switch is part of a sub assembly therefore the complete assembly will need replaced)

Until you get the switch replaced switch the shower on and off using the isolator switch (pull cord)

TCO’s in general very seldom fail unless the shower has been overheating and if a new one is faulty it basically just doesn’t work from the word go.

I have checked back and we have had no faulty returns for this part since the beginning of the year.

As it turns out, when I took the TCO out, it was not failing after all. But when I put it back in, it was going open circuit again! On closer inspection, it was a bit of corrosion deposit that was on top of the heater tank and was exerting pressure on the underside of the TCO, causing it to go open circuit. Once the corrosion was cleaned up, the TCO was reinstalled and is now working ok.
