Can black housing be seperated from replacement cartridge and Black barrel might be stuck

I have still to pluck up the courage to unscrew the broken cartridge from my March 2005 Mira Discovery and replace it (a house guest overscrewed the hot/cold mixer and the internal green part seperated from the unit). The inital replacement (It may be broken) is from a spare Mira Discovery shower discarded by the builder all those years ago and does not have the black barrel attached (seems to be stuck in the big metal housing). If I remove the broken cartridge and the black barrel comes out can I separate it from the broken cartridge and use it on the replacement cartridge? Or, If the black barrel stays in can I simply screw the brass part of the replacement cartridge onto the existing shower?

The black barrel and the brass part are the whole cartridge. If any of these are still in the shower body they need removed before the new cartridge is fitted.
