Mira Event swap out for identical replacement - now have issue

I have an Event manual, that was installed when the house was built (1999). I bought a second identical unit at that time, that has sat in the attic unused. I have not installed the "new" unit and have a problem. The shower runs, and after a varying period of time, the pump motor will scream and sound like its running dry. I am assuming that its air, but given lo leaks anywhere, I am guessing its being ingested from the hot feed from the tank. When you run the hot tap in the morning, you do get air in the flow, so I am assuming this is the problem, or indeed the shower is drawing air from the hot cylinder. There is no essex flange on the cylinder - it has a vertical pipe coming out at the top, and a 90 tee with the air vent rising vertically and all hot water being drawn from the horizontal tee leg.= - to shower and rest of home. Given that the old shower worked fine - and assuming no air leaks at the new shower end - what now? Should I fit an esssex flange? Thanks

Clearly it is installed incorrectly and you need to alter the pipe work or fit an Essex or Surrey flange.

However.........

you could try removing the head dropping the hose into the bottom of the tray or bath and turning the shower on to see if you can draw the water through.

If you can get the pipe work filled with water and no air then you may be lucky and the shower will start to almost syphon the water through, if the air is getting drawn in through the expansion pipe then it is a case of choosing one of the above options.

Our engineers occasionally come across the same problem you replace someone's shower that has worked well for years with a new unit of the same spec. You then find out that it isn't working properly because the original wasn't installed correctly, all we can say is the pipe work needs to be installed correctly before the shower will work properly.

Many thanks for the quick reply.

I think I will install an essex type flange - it can only help rule it out.

I intend to run all the house water through it no t just the shower - will this be a problem?

Given that all water to the house is coming of the T that I would be replacing I dont expect it will!

I wouldn't take all the house water from an Essex.

If you go for an Essex then that should only supply the shower.

many people use a Surrey flange as it is easier and just screws into the top of the cylinder and it is usually easier to connect to existing pipe work.

Thanks

I have ordered a Salamander Pumps S Tank Flange - which looks a sensible option (I hope!)

The hot feed to the house disappears through a plasterboard wall, and inside the cavity it splits up for shower and down for the rest of the house....so splitting the feed is going to be tricky (or messy)!

I did wonder why the S tank flange has holes at the end of the copper pipe feed - rather than just an open end... you would think the holes would reduce flow further.

The old shower sounds like it is running out of water due to the setup and the new one will , I presume , do the same.
An Essex or other type of flange should prevent this and it maybe a good idea to have it fitted before anything else is done.
