thermostatic cartridge change on mira excel

I have a Mira Excel shower which has been in situ for about 16 years without a single problem. It has now started getting luke warm only. If I go past the temperature stop, so hotter, then it gets extremely hot instantly but only for a few seconds then reverts back to luke warm. I assume the thermostatic valve has had it so I am about to order one My query is, the isolator valves for the hot and cold feed are not in the pipework just before the shower unit which I expected. I have a double impeller pump and the cold feed is a branch off the pipe coming down from my cold water tank in the loft and goes to one end of the pump. This pipe has a valve in it which I have turned off. The hot water feed has a pipe from the side of the hot water cylinder to the other end of the pump. This pipe has a valve in it which I have turned off. Now if I run the shower there is no water and the pump stays off whatever the temperature or pressure setting on the shower control. But if I go past the temperature stop on the shower control, so the hotter setting, the pump runs and I get scalding hot water non stop from the shower head. Do I need to do anything more to shut off the water, or will it not come out while I change the thermostatic valve as long as I don't set it to extra hot and don't have the control set to on. I don't see how going to the extra hot setting on the shower control makes the water start to flow again and the pump come on when on any other setting nothing happens. I am worried about taking the old valve out and boiling hot water pouring out.

If you take the cartridge out , and you have the pump running the water will pour out.

You will need to isolate the pump completely before starting.
