To fit this, do I have to remove the vertical bar (holding the shower head) and how easy is this achieve?

Yes you have to remove one end of the riser rail to slide the dish on

Below is a link to a video that shows how to replace a slider bracket, part of this video shows how to detach the vertical rail.
