checking the filter in the thermostatic cartridge

How do you do this? The shower is quite old (perhaps 12 years) so I am reluctant to buy a complete new mixer valve in case anything else goes wrong

As shown in the diagram , you remove the screws from part 10 and the cartridge pulls out.
