New Team 3000T Leaking - cheap fix

My 14 year old 3000T power shower had been dripping from the outlet point for some time but it got worse recently to the point that I had to do something about it. Having established that the unit was obsolete and receiving absolutely no assistance from the manufacturer I had concluded it would have to be replaced.

So.... that involved a new power shower with new electric supply and Part P electrical compliance, re-plumbling as no current model has the same water feed config, and rebuilding the wall and completely retiling the bathroom as no current model will fill the hole left by the old model. Probably new shower tray and enclosure needed as well.

Not an amusing prospect and probable cost at least £3,000.

I dismantled the existing unit to find out what I was letting myself in for and discovered the cause of the leak was the mushroom shaped washer valve that controls the shut of of water supply to the pump had got worn. No way you can find a replacement for this very specific item. Not from Shower Doctor or anywhere else, and certainly not the present owners of the "New Team" brand.

I went round to the local hardware shop and found an ordinary rubber washer of the same diameter as the original tip of the valve - cost 20p.

I put this washer behind the original valve and re-assembled the unit. Hey presto it worked. In fact it worked better than I think it ever has in the past.

So no thank you to New Team for totallyuseless customer support, and big thank you to my local hardware shop for having a box of cheap washers of all shapes and sizes.

And a slight pat on my own back for solving the problem with a bit of lateral thinking. I hope this helps someone else with the same problem.

At least I can now plan for the bathroom refurbishment when I am ready to do it, rather than having to do it in a rush just because of some stupid worn part.

Delighted to hear you managed to make this repair and I am happy to publish it on our site however for anyone attempting this I would like to add a bit of back ground info.

As you said the on/off shut off in this valve was never very good even when new and in places where it was fitted at its maximum inlet pressure it had difficulty keeping the water shut off!

NT used to sell this part as a spare however fitting it as a replacement part had some difficulties.

First getting the ‘O’ rings in the top of the mixing valve to reseal was one of these jobs where you could screw the thing back together and there was no problem the next one you tried to reseal would take 6 or 7 attempts to get it to seal.

The other problem was the spindle that holds the washer, where the spindle passes through the front cover of the mixing valve it often leaks from there, there were various designs of that spindle to try and combat that problem, eventually because of the problems NT stopped selling these parts as a spare and would only sell the complete mixing valve which in fact with some valves they still do to this day.
