shower wall outlet
The wall outlets have mostly male fittings.
There are some that are female , but these are for bare pipes to be inserted.
I take it that you do not have just a bare pipe out of the wall?

The pipe is threaded and sticks out of the wall for 1/2 inch. The old elbow fitting is chrome finished plastic and has cracked. Is there anything that would work for us? Thanks

Could it be that the male part used to be part of the wall outlet , such as the one shown above?

Most of these have a hex section down the centre of the brass or flats on the side for removal, so no need to remove tiles etc.
