However If you feel competent then I would put a multi meter across the terminals on top of the motor if the voltage goes up and down then probably the pot, if the voltage stays the same and the motor speed varies then most likely a motor and pump fault.
This is kind of one of these faults that you really need to be in front of the shower to diagnose.
If you are not keen to do this then it may be time to call in an electrician
