Plastic piston slider & wax thermostat

Is it a common fault that the plastic piston slider keeps snapping on the ears that hold it to click in together? And also is the wax thermostat broke if no hot water one minute then the next no cold water?

No to both questions.

The slider should not break as it is covered mostly by the front cartridge and the thermostat is not faulty given what is happening.

The piston is not designed to come apart and yes if you get it apart or when you are putting it back together the clips will often break.

The hot cold issue doesn't sound like a wax capsule fault.
