sirrhus 1500 antique temperature / flow problem

please can you confirm that the piston is the plastic part with plastic fins to the front and a spring at the back against the backplate. Please can you advise if the plastic fin section should rotate easily or is the 'free movement' you suggest is important is just front to back against the spring?

Thanks

Yes the fins face forwards, and the free movement is backand forward movement of the piston.
