sirrus traditional shower won't get hot

My Sirrus traditional thermostatic shower won't get hot, runs cold for a very long time before eventually becoming tepid. I usually run the cold taps on the basin because this seems to help but the shower pressure is then not as good. The hot water inlet pipe is scalding hot when touched. The problem is worse in the winter when the cold water from the mains is at a lower temperature. what do you think the problem is? Also if I need to order parts I don't know whether the thermostat has a plastic or a metal piston, I bought the shower in 2003, the instructions issue date is 07/08/02.
