without taking the shower apart (running cold) how do i know which stat to buy ?

This is the link to the Stat ifyou have the metal piston

There is no way you can tellfrom the outside whether you have the plastic or metal piston, however withthis valve it is more likely that you have the metal piston

If you are replacing the statthen I would advise also fitting a service kit.
