Cara 10.5kW - Water

Hi,

I removed a Triton Opal (10.5kW) for a customer on Saturday as the stabiliser actuating arm had broken and she has guests staying from tomorrow and didn’t want to wait for the part to arrive. She had no issues with any pressure or hot water loss with the Opal prior to the arm breaking. We purchased a Triton Cara (10.5kW) from the local B & Q and I installed it.

After completing the installation and commissioning procedure, I subsequently ran the shower to show the customer how to operate it. After approximately 10 seconds of hot water (on number 6) a click was heard from the shower and the water went cold (the power light was still on). I left it for about 30 seconds but the water was still cold. I turned the temperature dial down to 1 and then back to 6 and hot water then started to flow again, this happened 2 or 3 times before the hot water would come through. Then whilst checking it the hot water ran without any issues for approximately 5 minutes, no faults appeared.

I removed the front case to carry out my final checks on the connections etc thinking the shower was now working OK and noticed the stabiliser valve was leaking from the connection tube to the water inlet!

I returned on Sunday morning to investigate further and the valve had actually stopped leaking on its own for some unknown reason! I ran the shower again but the water still went hot to cold and occasionally back to hot. Eventually a constant flow of hot water (on number 6) was maintained for about 10 minutes and I believed the shower was operating normally, i.e. constant hot water, and so I left.

I have spoken to the customer this morning and she has stated that she had absolutely no hot water at all this morning! She has advised me the power light was on and she turned the temperature dial down to 1 and then back to 6 and then to 10, but she still had no hot water.

The cold water pipe was flushed out prior to fitting and the flow rate has not altered. The Opal and the Cara models both require 11 litres p/m and as previously stated, there were no issues prior to removing the Opal model.

With the head off, on hot and the water running it's very slow and on cold very fast which I believe is normal.

Do you have any ideas at all please?

Thanks

The shower needs a minimum pressure of 1bar the pressure can often drop in the morning when everyone is showering therefore if you are going to do a pressure check make sure you do it first thing.

I notice you said there was no problem with the Opal, if the pressure is low then the only answer I can give is some showers are more sensitive to pressure than others.

The click you heard was the thermal cut out activating this means that the water temperature in the shower was probably around 48°C This cuts the power off to the elements until the shower cools.

If you are happy that the water pressure and flow is OK then you could give Triton a ring and they will send out an engineer who will either replace or repair the shower as necessary
