Plugging the overflow pipe with a screwdriver

I don't have the money to get someone to fit another prd for £70+VAT, so I have plugged the overflow pipe with a screwdriver, now I get the water coming out of the shower head as normal. Can this be dangerous and why, it's been like it now for 2+ years without a problem. Thanks

Since the PRD is  a safety device on the bottom of the heating tank and blocking it removes its protective nature, if there is a blockage/restriction in this area the heating tank may expand in a violent manner.

It is fairly easy to replace however there is usually something that causes it to blow, often a kink in the hose or the showerhead is blocked, so check this before fitting the new PRD.
