Removing old cartridge

I want to change the cartridge, as the current one is very stiff. I've removed the control levers, but am faced with a large nut, covering the front of the cartridge, which I assume I need to undo in order to get to the cartridge. However it won't budge. I'm concerned I might break the feed pipes if I push any harder. Can you advise? Thanks.

Try spraying the area with WD 40 and leaving over night before attempting to remove the nut.
