Water flow dial hard to turn

Hi, the water flow dial is very difficult to turn and sticks badly. I can only get it to move by turning it a fraction then stopping then turning again until water comes through. I turned off the water to try and dismantle it and when there is no water pressure in the system the dial turns freely. Once the water pressure returns the dial sticks again. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I am hoping the whole unit does not need replacing as it's only 2 years old and has been tiled in. Thanks.

Would try stripping down cleaning and lubricating with silicon grease at the same time checking for any damage.
It could also be toohigh water pressure.
