Fitting the new cartridge

Does the water have to be switched off (isolated) before you can remove the cartridge...I took the white finishing cap off, then the small Philips screw, then removed the circlip...but couldn't pull the cover with the over ride button on it!

Yes the water will need to be isolated to replace the internal housing.
